We’re excited to announce the launch of our new Data Loss Prevention (DLP) API!

The DLP API detects and redacts personally identifiable information (PII) and other sensitive data exposed in text and documents. It’s an excellent tool for reducing your compliance threat profile and keeping your customer and employee information safe.

Why data loss prevention matters in modern workflows

Sensitive data is constantly moving in and around enterprise systems. Emails, file uploads, internal documents, and APIs all carry data from one storage location or workflow to the next.

Most of the time, sensitive data is handled safely and shared with the correct parties. In some cases, however, PII data is shared with the wrong group, which typically constitutes a major compliance violation. When that happens, it’s hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Preventing data leaks has always been challenging, but the problem has intensified in recent years. Distributed systems and cloud-based workflows are now all but standard, and reliance on automated document processing has skyrocketed. When even a single exposed data point (e.g., a Social Security Number or Credit Card Number) can lead to damaging compliance violations, this massive and largely unfiltered data transit starts to look a little scary.

Enterprise organizations need a way to detect and control sensitive data in real time, before it leaves their systems, or they’ll find themselves wrapped up in a never-ending sequence of legal disputes.

What the DLP API does

Cloudmersive DLP uses advanced AI to handle two distinct elements of data loss prevention:

  1. Sensitive data detection
  2. Sensitive data redaction

DLP Example email

And it works for the following inputs:

  1. Input text (e.g., email, messaging, form field inputs)
  2. Input documents (e.g., PDF, DOCX, XLSX)
  3. Input images (e.g., PNG, JPG, etc.)

As always, customization is at the heart of Cloudmersive’s diverse API platform offerings. Both detection and redaction can be configured with custom settings to meet your organization’s exact needs.

For example, custom flags such as ”AllowEmailAddress” or “AllowBirthDate” can be configured to allow or deny PII leaks in those specific categories. A text parameter ”RedactionMode” can be configured to either replace PII data with asterisks or black out that data with a dark rectangle.

Cloudmersive DLP is an excellent choice for outbound email scanning, file upload validation, document processing pipelines, API input & output filtering, and myriad other examples of text and document transit chokepoints.

Integration with the broader Cloudmersive platform

The DLP API works seamlessly in conjunction with other Cloudmersive APIs. Organizations can slot the DLP API seamlessly into new and existing automated workflows alike.

For example, DLP fits naturally in workflows involving Document AI and security processing. Organizations can run DLP after extracting fields from a document to ensure the extracted data is safe to store or transmit to external groups.

Additionally, DLP combines well with Cloudmersive Virus Scanning and Fraud Detection workflows. DLP and Virus Scanning secures both file content and embedded data, while DLP and Fraud Detection ensures documents are both legitimate and safe.

Flexible Deployment

As always, Cloudmersive customers have the option to deploy the DLP API following several unique deployment models:

  • Managed Instance deployments leverage dedicated, managed infrastructure with SLAs, customizable deployment, and security.
  • Private Cloud deployments can take place on the customer’s premises or in a cloud platform of their choice.
  • Public Cloud deployments leverage Cloudmersive’s multi-tenant public cloud offering.
  • PaaS deployments take advantage of Azure App Service or Azure Kubernetes Service offerings.
  • Government Cloud deployments take place in a specified government cloud region, suiting the data governance requirements of government entities.
