Configuring Cloudmersive Storage Protection for SMB and CIFS Network File Shares
10/1/2025 - Cloudmersive Support

To continuously scan Cloudmersive SMB and CIFS file shares, customers can leverage Cloudmersive Storage Protection for SMB.

To configure scanning, follow these steps:

  1. Provision a Windows Server 2016 or 2022 server on the same network as the file share. If the file share uses Active Directory/Entra ID for authentication, then the server should be joined to the same domain as the file share. In addition, there must be a user available that has access to the file share. For scanning only, read-only access is sufficient but if the customer requires deletion/quarantine/tagging of unsafe files then read/write access is required. Ensure that the network share has SMB protocol enabled.

  2. Map the SMB file share as a network drive.

  3. Install Cloudmersive Private Cloud on the server following the standard installation steps. This will make the Cloudmersive Virus Scan API available locally to perform the scanning.

  4. Install Cloudmersive Storage Protection on the server. Navigate to the Cloudmersive Management Portal, select Private Cloud, then select the corresponding server. Perform the installation steps listed in the portal. No restart is required.

  5. Follow the on-screen configuration steps to configure Storage Protection. Point it to the root folder of the mapped network drive as the scanning root. Then configure the API endpoint from step 2 as indicated.

Your Cloudmersive Storage Protection endpoint has now been installed. Test it by copying new files into the SMB network share.
